CABWHP 10th Anniversary Gala
“Women Who Dared: Our Legacy and our Future”

We marked our 10th year Anniversary and acknowledged four “Women Who Dared” during our recent breakfast celebration. The gala, emceed by actress Lisa Gay Hamilton, was held at the City Club on Bunker Hill in Los Angeles on June 10, 2004.

At the gala, we paid special tribute to four outstanding women who have blazed trails in their respective fields. The event’s keynote speaker was inspiring community leader Karen Bass (who recently won the Democratic primary election to California’s 47th district). We also honored: Meri Nana-Ama Danquah (Author, Willow Weep for Me), Lana Moorer, professionally known as MC LYTE, (legendary female Hip Hop pioneer/actress/activist) and Frances Jemmott (Founder, California Black Women’s Health Project). These are women who have stood strong and proud while making a lasting impact on their community. In reflecting about the importance of the event and our organization’s 10th anniversary, one local prominent grant-maker remarked “to see the collective of intellectual passion form and create such a sweeping state-wide change in women’s health is simply a wonderful blessing for [all] people.”

The event was infused with artistic expression. Attendees were graced by a piano prelude by Michelle Love and a dance tribute to the honorees entitled “Still I Rise” by professional dancers Amber King and Monica McSwain. Frances Jemmott’s daughter, Michel Dory, did a special photo tribute in honor of her mother’s role in birthing our organization. Also, the silent auction was quite successful and helped raise additional funds to support our organization. Our 10th Anniversary Gala was a tremendous success! We enter the next ten years with renewed commitment to continue blazing trails and changing lives.
